The Town of Londonderry has the distinction of having the largest white pine tree in the state of Vermont. This tree can be seen at the Gould residence on the north end of Under The Mountain Road — it is right off the road and can’t be missed. The tree is approximately 145 feet tall and was probably planted about the time of the Civil War. It is a massive tree with lots of history under its roots.

The Londonderry Conservation Commission is sponsoring a hunt for other biggest trees in town. We don’t need any more state records, but we are interested in locating largest specimens that may be hidden away somewhere within the town boundaries.

Winter is a great time to get out and enjoy our beautiful landscapes, and the commission hopes to stir up interest in one of our undervalued assets — our trees ! In an era when many trees are suffering from a variety of ailments, we feel it is important that we all become more aware of the trees around us.

If you know of a large tree on your property or spot one while out for a walk, (even if you aren’t sure what variety it is) please note its location carefully and email the Conservation Commission at: conservation@londonderryvt.org, or call one of the LCC members listed below. We will inspect the tree and local forester, Bob Twitchell, will determine its size based on categories set up by the state foresters.

Rules and Guidelines:

1.Participant must be a Londonderry resident or landowner.

2.Tree has to be in Londonderry.

3.Multiple submissions will be accepted until March 1.

We will announce our findings at Town Meeting on March 6. The finders of the three largest trees of three different varieties will be given a small tree to plant either on their property or in their honor on Town lands.
