As I sit here by my window watching the birds at our feeders, I wonder if the winter finches will come south this winter. It’s a drab day, today and I look for some color in the landscape. Over by the compost piles, the red stems of the red osier dogwood make a splash. Behind them, the green of the conifers, more evident now than in the summer, and the brown, black, and white tree bark stand out in contrast against the skyline.

In addition, of course, our birds show us flashes of red, blue, black, white, yellow, gray, brown and orange as they dart back and forth to the feeders and through the trees and shrubs. A bright orange fox showed up unexpectedly in the yard late one afternoon...
 
 
 
The Town of Londonderry has the distinction of having the largest white pine tree in the state of Vermont. This tree can be seen at the Gould residence on the north end of Under The Mountain Road — it is right off the road and can’t be missed. The tree is approximately 145 feet tall and was probably planted about the time of the Civil War. It is a massive tree with lots of history under its roots.

The Londonderry Conservation Commission is sponsoring a hunt for other biggest trees in town. We don’t need any more state records, but we are interested in locating largest specimens that may be hidden away somewhere within the town boundaries.

Dorset residents are now eligible for a 15 percent discount off JISP registration. This will reduce the JISP registration fee from $85 to $60 per child. Parents should visit www.dorsetvt.org, print out the JISP reimbursement form, attach proof of payment and residency and drop it off at the Dorset Town Offices for reimbursement. Let it snow!

Hibernation is a Survival Strategy Designed to Conserve Energy When Conditions are Harsh

It happens this time of year. You know, that desire to rush home as soon as it gets dark, put on comfy clothes, pop a wine cork and watch a pile of videos or tune into Netflix instant play in your living room.

Our big present this year at Christmas was a large screen smart television. My family was piled up on every piece of upholstery, enjoying every inch of that large screen, watching back-to-back episodes of Downton Abbey. At other times, we were tuned into our individual laptops searching the web or reading a Kindle. It occurred to me that we are going through big changes in the way we live...
 
 
 

Calling all girls ages 7 to 12 years old as of January 1, 2012. Young Women’s Softball sign-ups will be held on February 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for returning players; February 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. for new players. Both registrations will be held at the Bennington Fire House on River Street, Bennington, Vermont. If it is your first year playing, please bring a copy of your birth certificate. It’s always fun and games at the annual Woodchuck Festival and Firemen’s Games, Saturday February 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mettawee Community School, Route 153, West Pawlet brought to you by the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies’ Auxiliary.

The Woodchuck Festival is an all volunteer effort to raise funds for The West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies’ Auxiliary who provide fire protection and public safety services to West Pawlet and the surrounding region. All funds benefit the department and in turn the community.
